Specialist Cardiology in South Wales
HeartVets was set up in 2007 by Dr Mark Patteson MA VetMD PhD DVC CertVR MRCVS in order to provide a dedicated cardiology service to South West England. Mark has been assisted in these areas by Rosie McGregor & Joanne Harris. HeartVets have now been joined by Dave Dickson, allowing us to provide a local cardiology service for animals in South Wales.
We are the only cardiology service in South Wales led by an RCVS Recognised Specialist.
Mark is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology, having written a textbook on Equine cardiology and gained his PhD around echocardiography in the horse. He is published widely in the veterinary literature and is a regular speaker at national and international conferences. He has been based for many years at Vale Referrals in Gloucestershire but due to increased portability of state of the art equipment, he is now able to see non-urgent Small Animal and Equine heart cases on visits to South Wales.
Dave is an RVC graduate and after working in first opinion practices in South Wales, Yorkshire and New Zealand has gradually evolved into a full time veterinary cardiologist. He joined the HeartVets team in 2011 and holds the RVCS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Cardiology). He is based in South Wales, where he offers regular cardiology referral clinics in Cardiff here at Park Vets, along with clinics in Swansea and Haverfordwest. He is part of the referral team at Vale Referrals, working alongside Dr. Mark Patteson. Dave is currently working towards his RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology and is undertaking research into echocardiographic assessment of canine myocardial function.
As part of the HeartVets service, Dave Dickson is able to see cardiology cases once weekly at South Wales Referrals, based in Park Vets. He is also available to see emergency cases if required.
Our service include all types of cardiology:
- Treatment of congestive heart failure
- Assessment of significance of murmurs in adults dogs/cats and puppies/kittens
- Assessment and management of arrhythmias
- Assessment and management of pericardial effusions
- Assessment and management of collapsing animals
- Emergency referral service
It is important to have a thorough medical history and consultation with owners in order to assess the likely diagnosis and practical management of problems.
Echocardiography and Doppler Echocardiography
We have full facilities for echocardlography, a key facility and skill in the assessment of cardiac patients.
Digital radiography equipment is available at all of our centres.
ECG and Holter
Standard ECG is a long standing but invaluable technique. We also have a number of Holter recorders and software packages for Holter analysis (24-hour ECG Monitor). We often utilise this technique in animals with intermittent arrhythmias, in fainting animals and in cases where we are treating arrhythmias and assessing the effects of treatment.
Cardiac Catheter Interventions and Surgery
Some cardiac cases require surgery; currently these visit Mark's base in Dursley, Gloucestershire for treatment by the surgical team at Vale Referrals. A few procedures can be performed via catheter techniques and these are usually referred to an interventional cardiologist.
